1 Practical Session, New Skills: Students Learn to Make Pancakes

Practical learning gives students the opportunity to experience what they are taught rather than simply listen, observe or take notes.

During one of our sessions at Umunoha Secondary School, Mbaitoli, the Life Skills & Enterprise Club provided an opportunity for students to learn how to prepare pancakes.

I demonstrated the preparation process and provided the ingredients and materials. The students also had the opportunity to participate, handle the ingredients and practise making pancakes

under my supervision.

I wanted them to experience the process for themselves. Watching someone prepare a meal is different from taking part in its preparation. Through participation, students can develop familiarity with the materials, follow instructions and gain confidence in trying something new.

Giving Students Room to Practise

One important part of this session was allowing the students to take an active role. Rather than doing everything myself, I guided them and gave them room to practise.

These experiences matter because students need opportunities to develop useful abilities alongside their academic knowledge. Practical skills can build confidence, encourage creativity and help learners discover interests they may wish to develop further.

Why We Have the Life Skills & Enterprise Club

The Life Skills & Enterprise Club creates opportunities for students to explore practical activities and develop skills that can be useful in their everyday lives.

My intention is to make learning more connected to real-life experiences, particularly in a school environment where access to specialised learning facilities and resources is limited.

Every activity is an opportunity for students to try something, practise, ask questions and learn through experience.

I hope these experiences will encourage them to remain curious, resourceful and willing to develop their abilities.

Learning should give students something they can understand, practise and use.
